Winter Bears, also known as Kermode Bears or Spirit Bears, are a unique subspecies of black bears native to the Central and North Coast regions of British Columbia. They have white or cream-colored fur, though they are not albinos – this coloration is caused by a recessive gene present in approximately 1/10 of the population. Winter Bear cubs are born with white fur and develop their color as they mature.
Winter Bear populations are small and highly protected due to their rare genetic traits. Interestingly, Winter Bears were traditionally revered by Indigenous peoples, who believed them to be reincarnated souls of their ancestors or powerful spirits.
