Artist Naohisa Inoue created the backgrounds, clouds, and flying islands (known as “Laputa”) for the Flying scene. He is a former art teacher for high schools who have continued to paint “Iblard” drawings on his own. As Hayao Miyazaki was a major fan of Inoue’s anime, he gave him an invitation when he had his show. He didn’t anticipate anything, of course, but Miyazaki showed up there, and he purchased one painting (which is now on the wall of the cafeteria at Ghibli). The picture, titled “Upward Draft,” resembles the fantasy scenario in this movie identically. Then Miyazaki asked him if he might work on their upcoming movie. Inoue also performed as a voice actor in this movie. He performed with one of Mr. Nishi’s friends (the tall one) who participated in the “Country Road” jam session.
