Yuji Nomi wrote the Whisper of the Heart movie’s musical score. For her school’s chorus club, Shizuku occasionally translates John Denver’s song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” into Japanese throughout the movie. She also composes her own amusing Japanese cover of the song, “Concrete Road,” which is about her neighborhood in western Tokyo. Mamiko Suzuki, daughter of producer Toshio Suzuki, actually translated the songs, and Hayao Miyazaki contributed additional lyrics. At various points in the narrative, these songs are referenced. For example, the film’s opening scene has an Olivia Newton-John performance of “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Yoko Honna, who plays Shizuku’s voice actor, also sang the song.
