- This was Studio Ghibli’s first instance of a scene’s parts being constructed digitally, or on a computer. In this instance, it’s Baron’s flying sequence from Shizuku’s narrative. The little “planets” and Shizuku’s characters are just two of the numerous components in the scene that are all moving on their own. Although all of these pieces were traditionally animated, computer technology was used to mix them.
- A reference to one of Hayao Miyazaki’s earlier films, My Neighbor Totoro, can be seen on the bookshelf when Shizuku is looking for a new book to read in the library (1988).
