DID YOU KNOW…

US President Andrew Johnson was a true blue American, born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. He held public office well before becoming US President, starting as an Alderman in Greeneville, Tennessee at the young age of 21. Did you know that he was the first US President to be impeached by the US House of Representatives? Despite this unfortunate event, his presidential term ended with three achievements: passing the Civil Rights Act of 1866 which gave Black Americans US citizenship; passing measures that sought to aid war veterans; and vetoing bills for greater government control over US currency. It’s no wonder he was given the title “The People’s President!”
