Thanksgiving may conjure images of turkey and pumpkin pie, but the holiday also has historical roots in the European settlers’ journey to America aboard the Mayflower. This Thanksgiving Ship coloring page offers a fun way for kids (and adults!) to celebrate the holiday while learning about its history. The Mayflower carried both Pilgrims and non-Pilgrims, known as “Strangers,” on its voyage across the Atlantic in 1620.
The ship arrived at Plymouth Rock after a harsh, 66-day journey and played an integral role in the establishment of Plymouth Colony. As you color in this Thanksgiving Ship, imagine what it must have been like for those early settlers making their way toward the unfamiliar New World. Happy Thanksgiving!
Did you know that Thanksgiving famously originated with the Pilgrims on their voyage across the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower? But did you also know that there was another ship present during that fateful voyage? The Thanksgiving Ship, also known as the Fortune, sailed alongside the Mayflower and carried even more passengers seeking religious freedom.
While it has often been overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, the Thanksgiving Ship played a crucial role in the establishment of Plymouth Colony. Unfortunately, its later travels were not as successful; after making several successful trips to New England, it ran aground on a sandbar off Cape Cod and was eventually abandoned by its crew. Today, it remains buried beneath the waters off Cape Cod as a little-known reminder of Thanksgiving’s colonial origins. Happy coloring!
