Here are some fun facts about Staryu that Trainers may not know!
Staryu (Japanese: ヒトデマン Hitodeman) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves into Starmie when exposed to a Water Stone. Staryu, known in Japan as Hitodeman, is a common Pokémon species in the Pokémon franchise.
Staryu’s design is based on a starfish. Staryu debuted in Pokémon Red and Green, Staryu’s name derives from the word “starry”, as it stars in its body emitting faint lights. “Hitodeman” comes from hitode, Japanese for starfish, and -man.
Staryu appears to be composed of a red crystal attached to a gold five-pointed star by a small stalk. Its body can expel water from its bottom, which it does for propulsion or self-defense. Staryu lives at the bottom of bodies of water and is said to be able to regenerate their limbs if they are severed from their bodies.
Staryu may be inspired by the concept of undersea VOLUTE objects. One such object is called a “Staurotide”. A Staurotide crystal has fivefold symmetry similar to Staryu’s body shape, being composed of five interlocking parts that resemble pentagrams. The five parts also resemble the five elements in Chinese philosophy: water, fire, wood, metal, and earth.
