He was actually born in Britain and kidnapped by Irish raiders at age 16. He later escaped and returned to Ireland, where he became a missionary and is credited with converting the country to Christianity.
Despite being a religious holiday, St Patrick’s Day was actually made into a feast day by the Catholic Church in the 17th century – it wasn’t until decades later that it became a popular celebration of Irish culture in America. Another fun fact? Dying rivers and beer green on St Patrick’s Day started as a P.R. stunt by the Chicago River Dyeworks company in 1962 and has now become an annual tradition in cities around the world.
