Shuppet is a Ghost-type Pokémon that cannot learn Curse. Shuppet evolves into Banette. Shuppet is a small, marionette-like Pokémon that is primarily blue in color.
It has large, red eyes and a wide mouth. Shuppet’s body is mostly taken up by its head. It has thin, stringy arms and legs.
Shuppet is pricked by a needle-like object on its back and becomes a Shuppet. Shuppet seems to be based on both a traditional Japanese Shōwa period Ningyō puppet and the Karakuri method of automata from the Edo period. Shuppet may also be based on the mythological concept of an angry spirit or ghost that takes control of an inanimate object as well as the notion of a ‘puppet master’.
Shuppet may also derive inspiration from shadow theatre. As seen in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Shuppet can possess people and put them under hypnosis to turn them into criminals if their hearts are not in the right place when they are caught in Shuppet’s shadow. It is also capable of pulling strings to make people do what it wants.
Due to this, it is referred to as “The Stringspace Pokémon” in Pokémon XD. Shuppet is based on a kokeshi doll, which are carved wooden dolls from Japan.
