A hefty draft horse breed called a Clydesdale was developed in Lanarkshire, Scotland, close to the River Clyde. By breeding a Flemish stallion with local mares around the year 1715, the breed was enhanced; Shire blood was eventually incorporated. Around 1842, Clydesdales were imported to North America, but they never gained popularity as draft horses there.
The Clydesdale weighs 2,000 pounds (900 kg) and stands an average of 17 to 18 hands (68 to 72 inches [173 to 183 cm]) tall. Typically bay, dark brown, or black in color with noticeable white patterns. The breed is distinguished by feather (long hair) on the legs, handsome heads, and well-formed legs and feet. It is known for its high leg motion while walking or trotting.
