Did You Know…
Johnny Gruelle combined the terms “The Raggedy Man” and “Little Orphant Annie” from two poems by James Whitcomb Riley to create the moniker “Raggedy Ann” on June 17, 1915, not long after submitting his patent application for the doll’s design. (Riley was a well-known Hoosier poet and a friend and neighbor of the Gruelle family during the time that they lived in Indianapolis.) On November 23, 1915, the U.S. Patent Office approved Gruelle’s trademark application (107328) for the term Raggedy Ann.
