- A few of the movie’s protagonists bear the names of well-known Italian aviators, including Francesco Baracca, Adriano Visconti, and Arturo Ferrarin.
- In Porco’s World War I flashback tale, the flying boats are modeled by real-life aircraft. The Macchi M.5 is an Italian single-seat fighter flying boat that was created and produced by Macchi-Nieuport in Varese by Porco and his squadron. It was equally as agile and maneuverable as the land-based aircraft it had to battle. The Hansa-Brandenburg CC, a single-seat wooden-hulled fighter flying boat dubbed CC after Camillo Castiglioni, the Brandenburg company’s financial controller, is being flown by the Austro-Hungarians.
