- Porco Rosso’s real name is Marco Pagot. His parents, Nino Pagot and Toni Pagot, collaborated with Hayao Miyazaki on Sherlock Hound, and their sons, Gi Pagot and Marco Pagot, worked on Italy’s first animated film, The Dynamite Brothers (1949). (1984).
- Stiniva beach, a genuine beach on Croatia’s Vis island, served as the model for Porco’s refuge.
- Originally intended to be a humorous in-flight short movie. Studio Ghibli expanded the film into a full-length film with a serious tone due to the start of the Yugoslav Wars while keeping the humor of the manga it was based on.
The setting of Hayao Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso manages to mix fact and fantasy in a delicate way. The plot, which is set in the years following World War I, makes extensive use of meticulously detailed airplanes and a setting where the period and place are so distinct that the unfolding historical events can be easily identified. In reference to the advent of fascism in Italy at the time, the main character, an Italian bounty hunter named Porco Rosso, even said that he’d rather to be a pig than a fascist. This historical accuracy is set against a curse that transformed Porco into an anthropomorphic pig and a close encounter with death.
