Sôsuke’s father is a crew member of the Koganei maru. The town of Koganei is where Studio Ghibli is situated in Western Tokyo.
The beach community where the story is set was modeled by the Japanese town of Tomonoura in Japan’s Setonaikai National Park, where Hayao Miyazaki stayed in 2005.
