Trivia!
- Hayao Miyazaki: Just like the mother in My Neighbor Totoro (1988), “mother” Toki, the grumpy old woman in the nursing facility, is actually a loving homage to Miyazaki.
- The scene where Ponyo feeds the infant was added to demonstrate Ponyo’s ability to be altruistic and coexist with people. When Hayao Miyazaki was struggling with how to close the movie, he created the scene toward the conclusion of the shoot.
- You may see the mother and child that Ponyo later in the film serves tea and sandwiches to when Sozuke enrolls in preschool. The instructor advises the mother to not worry about her infant’s cold (later mentioned also).
