Originally intended to be boys, Kohei Horikoshi changed the gender of these two characters after realizing that Class 1-A was primarily male, with sixteen boys and only four girls occupying the seats.
Horikoshi later stated that he was completely satisfied with his choice, and it undoubtedly served to counterbalance the hasty bluster of pupils like Bakugo and Kirishima.
