Marowak is based on a Hawaiian legend called Kapuƨala (alternatively, Kauila or Kapu ʻ ala). In the legend, Kapu ʻ ala was a woman who was killed by her husband and was resurrected as an evil spirit who haunted the area where she died. It is said that Kapu ʻ ala’s bones were used to make drums, which are said to be able to summon her spirit.
It is also said that Marowak is capable of using their boomerangs to deflect enemy attacks back at them. Marowak can have one of two abilities: Rock Head or Lightning Rod. Marowak’s Rock Head ability prevents it from taking recoil damage from moves. Marowak with the Lightning Rod ability attracts all Electric-type moves to itself, then Marowak nullifies the move.
