Did you know that Donkey Kong featured Mario for the first time?
Shigeru Miyamoto’s first game was the arcade platformer Donkey Kong from 1981, which also happened to be the original Mario game. Players had to direct a character by the name of Jumpman to the top of each level while dodging the monkey’s projectiles in order to save the princess. It involved a large monkey throwing barrels down slopes. Later, Mario would take the place of Jumpman.
The fact that Miyamoto originally intended to make a Popeye game featuring the titular sailor man, Brutus, and Olive is also an intriguing fact to consider. Donkey Kong, Jumpman, and the princess were substituted for them when Nintendo was unable to obtain the necessary licensing.
