Dinosaur Fun Facts:
- Elasmosaurus was the longest plesiosaur at up to 14 meters (46 ft) long. Half of its length was its neck, which had as many as 75 vertebrae in it (in comparison to 7-8 neck vertebrae in humans). Elasmosaurus had four long, paddle-like flippers, a tiny head, sharp teeth in strong jaws, and a pointed tail. Plesiosaurs were not dinosaurs but marine reptiles.
- It is thought that the extinction of the dinosaurs was a result of two extremely devastating events that caused a mass extinction. The first of these was a meteorite that crashed into Earth after landing on what is now Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. A massive volcanic eruption that split what is now India in half occurred after that.
- Over 700 different dinosaur species have currently been named and identified. But according to paleontologists, there are still a ton of new and distinct dinosaur species waiting to be discovered.
