This is the recognized national equine of Ireland. The Irish Draught was initially bred as a farm animal, but because of their athletic build, they are now favored as sports horses. These horses are frequently crossbred with thoroughbreds because of their sturdy build and simple training.
The Irish Draught, Thoroughbred, and, to a lesser extent, the Connemara Pony were used to establish the Traditional Irish Horse (TIH), the first native Irish Sport Horse breed, in Ireland between 200 and 300 years ago. Prior to the establishment of the Irish Sport Horse (ISH) studbook in 1974, it was known as the Irish Hunter.
Prior to 1982, when foreign breeds and hybrids were initially registered as Irish Sport Horses, the Irish Sport Horse breed only included Traditional Irish Horses. The population of Irish Sport Horses currently includes TIHs. They are listed on IHR Online under the Traditional Irish Horse Category and registered as Irish Sport Horses (ISH)(TIH) on their passports (formerly Capalloir).
