Although the majority of air assaults over Kobe were only to plant mines in the water, a few terrible raids actually hit the city. A total of 331 bombers from the XXI Bomber Command, specifically the 73rd, 313rd, and 314th bombardment wings, attacked the northwest corner of the city, the area south of the main railroad line, the area northwest of the main railroad station, and the area northeast of the third target on March 16 and 17, 1945. The first attack, on February 4, 1945, was relatively minor. In the ensuing conflagration, 21% of the city’s metropolitan sections (650,000 homes, industries, and other structures) were destroyed, and 8,841 people perished, including two American airmen who were shot down and then killed by firing squad.
