Common Blue (Polyommatus Icarus)
The Lycaenidae family of blue butterflies, famed for their swift flying, includes this one as the most prevalent member. Males often roam their territories in search of females and have wings with a unique blue upperside. Females who are duller and browner live more sedentary lives, preferring to drink, relax, and lay eggs. Multiple Common Blues are observed to perch together in communal roosts in the evening, often on the same grass stem.
In the summertime meadow at St. Nicks, keep an eye out for this butterfly as it consumes Birdsfoot Trefoil.
