Cardcaptors is a Japanese anime television series produced by Madhouse, directed by Morio Asaka, and written by Nanase Ohkawa of CLAMP. The 70-episode series is based on CLAMP’s Cardcaptor Sakura manga series. Cardcaptors follows Sakura Kinomoto, an elementary school student who discovers that she possesses magical powers after accidentally releasing a set of magical cards from the book they were sealed in. She must retrieve those cards to prevent disaster from befalling her loved ones and the world. Asaka and Ohkawa wanted Cardcaptors to appeal to a wider audience than just young girls like Sakura and incorporated action scenes into the series.

Cardcaptors was broadcast on TV in Tokyo in Japan from April 2000 to March 2001. When the English adaptation Cardcaptors premiered on Kids’ WB! in the United States on June 17, 2000, significant changes were made to target the American market including alterations to character designs and names and the addition of new episodes not seen in Japan. These changes caused controversy among some fans of the original series who felt that Cardcaptors was diluted compared to its original form.

Nevertheless, Cardcaptors was awarded “Best Animated Television Production for Children” at the 2001 Annie Awards and was praised for its strong central character, creative storytelling, fluid animation, and voice acting. Despite criticism for its changes, Cardcaptors proved popular with viewers in both Japan and North America; merchandise based on the show generated US$200 million in revenue during 2000.
