Flower Facts!
Solitary flowers, like crocuses or lotuses, are joined to the rest of the plant by a stalk called a peduncle. As seen in this image of a lily of the valley, each flower in an inflorescence is connected to the primary peduncle by a small stalk known as a pedicel. The receptacle, a thickened area where the peduncle or pedicle connects the flower, also serves as the point of attachment for other flower components like the petals and ovary.
The petals and sepals of the flower, both of which are modified leaves, make up the perianth. Although they can occasionally resemble the petals themselves, sepals are frequently green (as seen in the photo, at the base of each flower). They act as the topmost layer of a flower bud before opening to support the reproductive components of the flower. Like sepals, petals aid in the protection of the reproductive organs and are frequently brightly colored to entice pollinators. Bees and butterflies, for instance, are drawn to the yellow and purple blooms.
