Did you know…
Butterflies can also get away from the cold by moving to a warmer area. Some butterflies migrate short distances, like the painted lady and cabbage butterfly, while others, like the monarch, migrate thousands of kilometers.
Monarch butterflies are known as the long-distance migratory champs because they can fly up to 4000 miles round-trip. From Canada and the northern United States, they start their flight south before the autumn cold sets in. Monarchs travel in two months or less to the warmer regions of California, Florida, and Mexico, stopping along the way to eat nectar. They will spend the winter resting before the return flight once they have reached their southern destination.
