Fun Facts about Porco Rocco:
Ensign Charles Hammann, a US Navy fighter pilot during World War I, may have served as a model for Porco Rosso, a character created by Marco Pagot. Over the Adriatic Sea, Hammann and Porco both engaged Austria-Hungary with a Macchi M.5 biplane fighter. Despite being under fire, he managed to save a downed fellow pilot, earning him the Medal of Honor.
The story takes place along the eastern Adriatic Sea coast between Croatia’s Dalmatian and Kvarner islands, fascist Italy’s Northern Italy, and a fictional city named Fiume. Porco’s hidden beach is remarkably similar to Stiniva, an inlet on the southern tip of the Croatian island of Vis.
