The Promised Neverland is a tremendously innovative anime series, and a large reason it works so well is that it makes a concerted effort to develop an original plot and go against conventional genre assumptions. The Promised Neverland author Kaiu Shirai has acknowledged a number of other writers and series as having influenced his work, but the series genuinely forges its own way. Shirai appreciates the works of Yusei Matsui’s Assassination Classroom, Takeshi Obata (Death Note, Hikaru no Go), and Naoki Urasawa (Monster Pluto).
