Hiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist, wanted to be sure she had all the facts straight because she intended to write extensively about characters experiencing the suffering of war.
Arakawa conducted interviews with WWII veterans in order to get information about their military careers. Arakawa’s interviews led to several characters in the show displaying PTSD symptoms.
Her interviews were occasionally gruesome, but they were also humorous on occasion. Arakawa depicted herself questioning one of the veterans about his eating habits in volume 15 of the comic.
