Actually, the velociraptors from Jurassic Park belonged to a distinct species of raptor. The raptors featured in the book and the movies were largely modeled off deinonychuses, a wholly unique and enormous raptor found in the US. The discoverer of the deinonychus met with Jurassic Park author Michael Chrichton to discuss the raptor’s habits. He even acknowledged that all but names of the raptors in his book were Deinonychuses.
Most likely, deinonychuses dismembered their prey with their claws. Their moniker, which translates to “awful claw,” was given to them because of their large, razor-sharp hind claw.
