Did you know that not all dinosaurs were fierce predators?
In fact, some had pretty quirky names like maiasaura, which means “good mother reptile,” and psittacosaurus, or “parrot lizard.” And in 1842, the first dinosaur to ever be named was actually a mistake! The naturalist Sir Richard Owen wanted to name the fossil iguanodon, but due to a typo it ended up as “i-guanadon,” resulting in the somewhat awkward moniker of “iguanadontidae.” But perhaps one of the most interesting dinosaur names is stokesosaurus, named after the paleontologist who discovered its remains – Jonathan Stokes.
However, it turns out that these fossils were actually from a species that had already been identified – megalosaurus. So for a brief period of time, stokesosaurus officially became a junior synonym of megalosaurus until it was disproven and given its own unique name – lutonuatlus. Who knew studying dinosaurs could be so fascinating?
