The thumb of the iguanodon was placed on top of its nose during the initial reconstruction.
We didn’t understand the long, spiky thumb was actually a strange thumb-like digit until 40 years later, in 1878 when more iguanodon skeletons were found!
Even while it may have been for self-defense, paleontologists have yet to come up with a clear explanation for why iguanodons evolved such long, spiky thumbs.
