DID YOU KNOW…
Christopher Columbus was a man of great ambition and even greater courage who, in 1492, set sail westward across the ocean in search of the Far East. Columbus sailed across the Atlantic on three ships – the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria – along with a crew of ninety sailors. He made four voyages, landing in numerous Caribbean islands but never making it to his ultimate destination. Columbus died believing he had discovered new lands for Spain but he was actually on his explorations in Central and South America. Columbus may have not achieved all that he set out to do but many fun facts remain about him today. For instance, Columbus was born in Genoa more than five hundred years ago, was the first explorer to use a sextant during his journey, and has two American states named after him – Ohio and North Carolina!
