It’s widely known that Columbus opened up a pathway to North America and made a lasting impact on the world. But there’s more to Columbus than just his famous voyage! Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, and during his lifetime, he traveled over 106,000 miles at sea. He was also quite the resourceful navigator; Columbus was able to identify currents in the Atlantic Ocean which enabled him to complete three separate transatlantic voyages between Europe and South America. An interesting Columbus fact is that he also believed he had discovered a route to India! While he never reached India, Columbus initiated contact between Old World civilizations and the natives of the Americas who inhabited various islands along Columbus’ sailing routes – an event that would ultimately shape world history.
