American horses of the Spotted Draft Horse or paint draft horse breed first appeared in the second half of the 20th century. The main goal in creating this breed was to produce an animal better suited to power than just action. These are adaptable animals that have excelled in a variety of endeavors and have gained notoriety as utility animals quickly.
The Spotted Draft Horses were created in the 1990s by Minnesotan and New Mexican breeders. One of these breeders, Leonard Tostenson, had a chance encounter with the owner of a Spotted Moroccan, a saddlebred variety that rose to prominence in the 1940s as a parade horse.
Did you know? Rare SDH specimens occasionally have blue eyes, however, this is permitted by the breed’s requirements. Draft horses can pull a semi truck.
