Comma (Polygonia c-album)

This butterfly stands out because of its wing edges, which are jagged and irregular. When hibernating, the underside of the wing can be colored to resemble a withered leaf because of this ability. The little white sign on its underside, which is shaped like a comma, gave rise to the name. The Comma may rouse on a warm winter day, although being more frequently seen in the summer.

On St. Nicks, keep an eye out along the edges of the wooded areas where you might see the Comma consuming thistle, bramble, or knapweed.
