Butterfly fact!
To fly effortlessly, butterflies need a body temperature of between 82 and 100 degrees. They are unable to control their body temperatures because they are cold-blooded creatures. They become immobile and lose the ability to eat and flee from predators if temperatures fall below 55 degrees. A butterfly may be seen “sunning” itself or shivering on chilly days in an effort to warm up the muscles that control its wings during flight.
A butterfly may only live for two to four weeks after emerging from the chrysalis. They will make the most of their limited time by looking for food and mating. Some of the smallest “blue” butterflies have a lifespan of just a few days, whereas adult butterflies that overwinter, such monarchs and mourning cloaks (shown), can live for up to nine months.
