In order to fly, butterflies actually need to maintain a fairly high body temperature. A butterfly’s body temperature needs to be about a mind-boggling 30°C (86°C) in order for it to function at its best. The butterfly will become completely immobile if it is too chilly. For an insect with cold blood, maintaining a high internal temperature is challenging. Butterflies ‘bask’ in the sun by remaining stationary on vegetation and spreading their wings in direct sunlight. The network of tiny capillaries in their wings heats the blood in the veins of the butterflies, enabling the transmission of warmed blood throughout their diminutive bodies.
