Did you know…?
Many predators believe that butterflies would make an excellent supper. The patterning of a butterfly has changed over time as a form of defense. Some have evolved wing hues and designs that blend into their surroundings. Additionally, because they are toxic when consumed by predators, such as monarch caterpillars who consume lethal milkweed leaves, predators have learned to stay away from vividly colored butterflies. Because certain butterflies have adopted their patterning, these dangerous butterflies’ predators will also stay away from them.
Within 10–12 feet, butterflies can see clearly, but beyond that, objects become hazy. In addition, they must rely on UV colors, which are invisible to human sight, to locate suitable blossoms and partners. By growing flowers in greater clusters of one color or one plant kind, you might make it easier for butterflies to “see.”
