DID YOU KNOW…
In the past, petunias were lanky plants with tiny flowers that were either white or purple.
The majority of the contemporary petunia types are descended from two South American native species, Petunia axillaris, and Petunia violacea. Through the late 1800s and the early 1900s, breeders from all over the world tried to create larger, double, and more vibrant flowers that lasted longer in bloom. The first yellow petunia was created by Claude Hope and released by Goldsmith Seeds in 1977. The first really crimson petunia, a multiflora variety called “Comanche,” was produced in 1953 by PanAmerican Seed. All the petunias we know today are a result of these and numerous other introductions.
