According to legend, the Knights Templar worshiped a god called Baphomet, who has since been incorporated into a number of occult and Western esoteric traditions. Beginning in 1307, the name Baphomet appears in trial transcripts for the Knights Templar Inquisition.
In a letter he wrote in 1098 to describe the Siege of Antioch during the First Crusade, Anselm of Ribemont made the first recorded mention of Baphomet. Most academics agree that Anselm’s claim that the Turks “called loudly upon Baphomet” alludes to Muhammad, the founder of Islam. Philip IV of France imprisoned every Templar in France in 1307 on charges of heresy including idolatrous worship of a bearded male head known as Baphomet. Freemasons had also (falsely) been associated with Baphomet worship by the nineteenth century.
Since 1856, the name Baphomet has been connected to the “Sabbatic Goat” image created by Éliphas Lévi, which consists of binary elements symbolizing the “symbolization of the equilibrium of opposites”: half-human and half-animal, male and female, good and evil, etc. Lévi intended to use Baphomet to represent his ideal of perfect social order, and the name Baphomet has been connected to the concept.
